On September 28, a reception dedicated to the 28th anniversary of independence of the Republic of Armenia took place at the Armenian cultural centre in Odessa, organised by the Armenian community of Odessa and the Consulate General of Armenia.

The national anthems of Armenia and Ukraine were played at the beginning of the reception, giving the start to the festivities.

Samvel Tigranyan, the President of the Armenian Community of Odessa greeted the guests and expressed his gratitude to those present for celebrating the Armenian Independence day with them. Afterwards, the Consul General of Armenia in Odessa Gevorg Petrossian made a speech. The Armenian diplomat spoke in particular about the independence and statehood gained and lost from time to time throughout the whole history of the Armenian people, the century-long deprivations and struggles for freedom, the important role of the Armenian culture and church in the preservation of the Armenian identity. G. Petrossian noted how important and precious the independence of their country is for every Armenian, gained at the cost of myriad deprivations.

The speeches of the Armenian side were concluded by the Ambassador of Armenia in Ukraine Tigran Seiranian. After welcoming and thanking the guests, the Ambassador spoke briefly about the rocky and difficult path of the past 28 years of both Armenia and Artsakh, presented the democratic processes that are taking place in today's Armenia, the Nagorno-Karabakh issue and the aggressive and deconstructive policy pursued by Azerbaijan. The Ambassador also spoke about the impact of the Armenian community in the Odessa region, particularly referring to the activities of the Tahirov Institute of Grape Winery founded by Armenian and Soviet scientist Vasily Tahirov. At the end of his speech, Ambassador Seiranian expressed his gratitude to the organisers and sponsors of the event, in particular to the Union of Armenians in Odessa headed by President Samvel Tigranyan, to Mesrop Khachatryan, President of the "Rainbow" Charitable Foundation and to Anna Gevorgyan, President of the Women's Committee of the Union of Armenians of Ukraine.

From the Ukrainian side, Yuri Dimchoglo, Deputy Chairman of the Odessa Regional Council, Pavel Vugelman, Deputy Mayor of Odessa and Sergey Orlov, representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine in Odessa, delivered congratulatory speeches.

The event was also rich with its cultural part. Throughout the evening, the symphony orchestra, the choir and ballet soloists of the "Grand Orchestra" of Odessa and singer Siranush Minasyan performed for the attendees. The founder and chief conductor of the "Grand Orchestra" is Vitali Kovalchuk and the artistic director is Gayane Harutyunyan.

Heads and representatives of Consulate Generals and Honorary Consulates accredited in Odessa, as well as representatives of regional, city, executive and legislative bodies and the Armenian community were present at the reception.
